ELITE PACK - BACKPACK > FRONT & REAR PANNIER SET
The Elite Convertible Pannier Backpack is the flagship model of the series, allowing for maximum capacity and mobility in both cycling and hiking configurations. Allowing you the conversion between a spacious backpack and full front and rear set of panniers, the Elite Pack system is designed to offer best-in-class performance and rugged durability.
The removable bungee cord that attaches the bags near the hub also pulls both halves firmly together for a tight ride. Side compartments are 8″ x 5″ x 5″, and feature #8 coil zippers. The top compartments are 5″ x 5″ x 5.5″ and close with a drawstring. Reflective striping at the top of the pannier compartments, front and rear, help keep you visible at night.
These are not Low Riders – they mount to a 5-1/2″ wide x 8″-10″ long over-the-wheel front rack, and give an easy 17″ clearance from road/trail hazards, while balancing your load and giving your front wheel a solid, stable feel.
The front panniers are integral to the Elite system, and are not sold separately.
The Elite Pannier Backpack system combines the front and rear panniers, converting to the internal-frame backpack. Capacity is 3975 cubic inches of gear in a total of nine compartments.
In addition, we also now include a harness/utility bag and user-defined external capacity called the “Piggyback”, which is kept in place by the vertical compression straps. This holds any extraneous gear at the top (recommended) or bottom (shown in photo) of the backpack. Weight of the complete system is 6-1/2 lbs.
A fully adjustable harness system wraps your shoulders. The top stabilizer straps hold the pack to your back, allowing you to transfer weight to your hips. The padded waist belt features angled compression straps for added stability. Standard waist belt size fits waist 30″ to 44″. Large size fits 44″ to 60″. Small fits 23″-30″. (Standard size assumed: Please specify if you prefer larger or smaller.)
The internal frame consists of two 1” wide lengths of 6061-T6 aluminum that double up as pannier supports.
Anchored close by are two vertical compression straps which support the pannier sections. These straps are useful not only for tying down extra gear, but tightening the strap also secures the pannier to the bike.
The backpack’s side pockets zip and snap together to become the 1325 cubic inch front panniers. See video for details.
The only internal stiffener used is an embedded aluminum bar located at the bottom of each pannier, which functions to support the bungee cord located there.
Anchored close by are two vertical compression straps which support the pannier sections. These straps are useful not only for tying down extra gear, but tightening the strap puts tension on the bungee cord, securing the pannier to the bike.
The result is that you have a stable ride whether the bags are empty or strapping down the kitchen sink! To keep the pannier out of the rear wheel, the backpack’s internal frame mounts horizontally to the most vertical stay of the rack and to the bike’s tube, ~6-8” above the bottom bracket, using the hardware shown. Since there is minimal hardware involved, the pack can be removed from the bike in seconds. Reflective striping at the top of the pannier compartments, front and rear, help keep you visible at night.

We now include a bag for stashing the hiking harness when you’re biking. It comes as standard equipment with both the Elite and Classic model pannier backpacks. This bag mounts to the compression straps with belt loops, so light loads can be carried without compression. We call it the “Piggyback” because it has no straps of its own, and has to hitch a ride on something else. As seen in the photo’s throughout the website, the compression-strap mount allows the bag to be positioned wherever you want it, including as an extension to the Shadow Pack. This is a breathable bag – all sides are made of a durable mesh. Whether or not you want to use it to carry your hiking harness, it makes a handy bag for a drying swimsuit, or packing anything you don’t want crushed in a tight bag (i.e. dinner). The Piggyback comes standard on the Classic and Elite models, in a face color to match your pack. If you’d like another, they can be purchased separately – due to the difficulty of matching dye-lots, if you order this bag at a later time than your Convertible, we suggest you go with black.
